SELF INSTALL WOVEN STEEL PANELS

You can now purchase our beautiful woven steel fencing in a post and panel form. We developed this system to provide our unique fencing in a familiar format. The posts provide a strong vertical contrast to the weaving steel creating their own pleasing rhythm.

We offer two material variations, both of which have a 25 year guarantee but will be around for much longer. Unlike most fences ours actually get better with age!

Corten steel fencing panels

The panels are made from the highly fashionable Corten steel (also known as COR-TEN or weathering steel). They quickly form the trademark soft, organic brown tones to produce a true design piece and highly practical fence or screen which will sit beautifully in any environment to provide many years of maintenance free service.

Galvanised steel fencing panels

The dusty grey tones of our galvanised steel panels provide a perfect, neutral back drop to any scheme. Whilst a contemporary concept, the matt, oxidised finish provides an aged beauty. The mild steel posts weather to brown providing a striking contrast to the grey panels. Like the Corten, the galvanised panels provide a maintenance free lifetime of service.

THE WOVEN STEEL FENCING PANEL SYSTEM

Installation is straight forward being the same as a standard post and panel fence (see our installation video down the page) All fencing panels are 1.5 metres wide and available in 4 standard heights (0.9m 1.2m, 1.5m and 1.8m). However we can create panels to any height from 30cm to 3 metres! Get in touch for pricing or advice on bespoke sizes. Posts are 60cm longer than the panels for cementing into ground (unless requested otherwise). We can also provide posts with base plates for securing onto hard surfaces. The panels can be fixed in the post at any height which is useful when creating stepped fences. We can also supply a cut panel kit for instances where the panels need cutting to reduce their width.

Every part is made from steel. We have developed the posts in conjunction with the panels. Internal post fixings tightly grip the panels with a turn of a spanner. You can relax in the knowledge that your woven steel fencing is guaranteed for 25 maintenance-free years.

The fluidity of the woven steel never fails to intrigue and provides a pleasing rhythm to lead ones eye around the landscape. The weave is tight enough to provide privacy but allowing some air flow reduces the turbulence created by solid barriers.

Our woven steel fencing is as much a piece of architecture as a functional fence.

Boundary fencing

Whether in Corten or galvanised steel, the two different looks both provide a contemporary boundary screening unlike anything seen before.

A contemporary feature

Our galvanised panels paired with untreated mild steel posts are a strong statement. The weathered steel posts and silver panels provide a unique contrast and sense of rhythm we've not seen before on fences. The grey is also the perfect neutral backdrop for planting complementing any colour scheme. Being galvanised the panels and 6mm thick steel posts will be looking lovely for over 40 years!

Screening to hide oil, gas tanks or bins

A styish solution for an age old problem. Being non combustible, our woven steel fencing is ideal for screening fossil fuel storage areas. The ability to cut our panels to size provide the flexibility to screen most areas. (Please check with your gas or oil supplier and regulations before ordering).

Simply a beautiful backdrop

The choice of brown Corten or grey galvanised steel panels will provide an ideal back drop to most features.

Perfect for screening

The weave on our Corten panels allows light to pass through so is not oppressive as solid barriers can be but still provides all the privacy you need.
The rusted steel brings age and maturity to a garden and horizontal slats also provide a lovely contrast to verticals of trees and plants.

Bespoke panel heights

Enquire about bespoke panel heights to create galvanised or Corten steel raised beds. The panels can be cut to any width on site (requires an angle grinder).

What are the standard panel sizes

Please see the table below for the standard panel height and post lengths and please enquire if you require different sizes.

How wide are the panels and posts?
Panels are 150cm wide. The posts add approx 1cm. A post and panel combined is 151cm.

Can the panels be cut down to reduce their length?
Yes, and it’s simple but you will need an angle grinder to cut the panel and our cut panel kit to complete the new panel end. A small 115mm grinder with a metal cutting disc is ideal. Our cut panel kit clamps the slats together, the panel is then cut along the line of the kit and is fitted into the posts as normal. Our installation guide has more information on this.

What tools and materials do I need?
The same tools and materials as for a standard fence ( level, spade / digging tool, stringline, post mix etc). If you need to cut a panel to size it is simple but you will also need an angle grinder, drill and our cut panel kit.

Do I need any fixings?
No, we supply everything you need.

Can I have a stepped fence?
Yes, the panels can be fitted in the posts at any height.

How do the panels fix to the posts?
Our specially designed posts are slotted to receive the panels, fixings are pre attached to the posts, there are no loose fixings. Once the panel is pushed into the post a spanner is used to tighten the fixings tightly gripping the panels.

What is Corten steel?
Also known as COR-TEN and weathering steel. It quickly forms rich brown tones which then protects itself from further decay. It has become highly fashionable in recent years for use in construction, architecture and art (including the stunning Angel of the North). What is galvanised steel?
This is a standard mild steel which is cleaned in acid and has been dipped in holt molten zinc which becomes bonded to the surface of the steel giving it a silver appearance. Galvanising can protect the steel for up to 170 years!

How heavy are the panels?
A 90cm high panel weighs 35kg, a 120cm panel = 47kg, a 1.5m panel = 58.5kg and a 1.8m panel = 70kg. Posts range from 14kg to 22kg.

What are the posts made from?
The posts are made from 6mm thick untreated mild steel ‘H’ section. They will weather to the same warm brown as the Corten panels after 6-9 months and being 6mm thick they will last well in excess of 25 years.

What is the delivery lead time?
3-4 weeks on corten panels and 4-5 weeks on galvanised panels.

What about corners?
Simply use an end post for each run of fence, please let us know on ordering.

WOVEN STEEL PANELS INSTALLATION GUIDE

Installation of our panels is the same principle as installing a standard panel fence. Our instructions however cover the whole process.

Please note the panels are heavy and should be installed at the same time as the posts rather than lifting the panels up and sliding into pre fixed posts. For safety and convenience we recommend two people.

Tool list

13mm spanner, string line, tape measure, spade, marker pen or chalk, post mix or sand and cement. If you are cutting a panel you will also require a drill and angle grinder (ideally 115mm / 4” ) eye, ear and hand protection is required when using and angle grinder and drill.

1. Ground preparation
As for any fencing work this is key. Ensure the area is cleared of any growth which will obstruct a low string line. Most importantly you should level and smooth the ground below the panel run so the panels can simply rest on the ground at the correct height level and be well supported. If the bottom of the fence is stepped then ensure the ground is too. Getting this right will go a long way to making installation very straightforward. You can use bricks or similar to support the panels if required.

2. Set up a string line
There are different ways of setting up a string line. Our preference is to run a string down one side of the fence line so it’s about 0.5cm away from where the posts will be and 10cm above ground level.

Ensure the string line is tight and is not obstructed as this is your fence line and level!

3. Dig the post holes
Post holes will be located at the panel widths so 1.5m intervals. Use the string line and tape measure to mark the position with a peg or spray paint or dig them as you go.

Dig the holes at least 60cm deep. They should be at least twice the size of the posts to allow for concrete, larger is fine but this will require more concrete and digging!

A little tip. Once you have dug the first hole, place one of the posts in it to ensure your hole location and size is correct when the post is levelled against the string line.

4. Mark the posts
Make a clear pen / chalk line on the posts 10cm above ground level. Do this by measuring the total fence height from the top of the post down and minus 10cm ie for a 1.5m high panel make line 1.4m from the top of the post. Line the mark on the post with the string line to get the correct post height.

5. Install the first post and panel(s)
Have your post mix ready (or cement and sand). It’s also advisable to have some props to keep the fence upright while the concrete is setting. Check the nuts inside the posts are done up to give you maximum clearance for the panels.

Place the first post (typically an end post) in the hole ensuring it is level and at the correct height.

With the post in position offer up the panel ensuring it pushed all the way against the central strip inside the post. To adjust the panel height, lever it up from the ground using a spade or bar and prop up with stones, bricks or similar. Ideally add a slightly higher support than is needed and tap the panel down to ensure it is bedded onto the ground and level across the top.

During this process ensure the post is supported at all times to avoid it falling and causing injury, a second pair of hands at this point is useful.

With the panel in the correct position turn the nuts to grip the panel and concrete the post in checking levels if not done so already. Do not over tighten the bolts, a medium / firm turn of the spanner is plenty but ensure there is no movement of the panel in the post.

Prop up the panel to prevent movement while the cement is drying.

6. Install the second and subsequent posts and panels
With the first panel and post in, next place the second post in the hole and push it into panel ensuring it is touching the centre of the post from top to bottom. If the panel is level across the top and the post is level there shouldn’t be a gap between the panel and central strip in the post.

Check the level and height of the post and when you're happy turn the internal nuts to grip the panel.

Onto the next panel. Place this into the post until it cannot go any further. Check it is flush up against the inside of the post and level across the top and tighten. As before ensure it is supported by hand until the next post is in position.

Fit the next post. Cement into position and prop the panel to prevent movement.

Repeat this procedure keeping the panels propped up as you go. At the end of the run you may need to cut a panel to length. If this is the case please see below.

Cutting a panel to adjust the length

At the end of the run you may need to cut a panel down to make it fit. If this is required you will need a cut panel kit so please let us know if this is the case. With our cut panel kit reducing a panel is as straightforward as cutting back a timber panel, you just need an angle grinder as opposed to a saw.

Tool list
An angle grinder (ideally 115mm / 4”) a drill, our cut panel kit and PPE (goggles, gloves and ear protection).

Our cut panel kits include steel end bars, self drilling screws and hex head socket. Please note if you wish to reduce both ends of a panel you will need two cut panel kits.

1. Measure the width of the panel you require taking into account the width of the post. Mark a cut line ensuring it is square to the rest of the panel.

2. Fit the cut panel kit.

A. Lay the end bars either side of the panel along the cut line on the section of fence you wish to keep, the bar with the spacer blocks should be on the underside facing down. Ensure the panel is on a level surface and one that screws are allowed to penetrate!

B. Place the self drilling screws in the holes provided in the top bar and drill and screw down through the panel slats and into the bottom bar until all three are tightly clasped. We have provided additional screws in case they are needed. These will be able to drill through the top bar where there are no predillled holes.

It is important that the spacer bars are tightly clamped throughout their length otherwise the panel will not fit into the post.

C. Trim off the excess screw length so they do not protrude past the spacer blocks on the outside of the bar.

If one of the vertical box bars (around which the slats weave) is within 20cm of the end of the panel, it may prevent the fence slats squeezing together in which case you will need to remove or move it. This is done by cutting off the three small welds attaching it to the slats by using an angle grinder. Please do this carefully in order not to damage the weaving slats. Once cut from the slats the bar can be tapped out with a hammer or slid across to reposition. Friction will keep it in place. Do not remove the vertical bar if you wish to keep it within the panel - they are tricky to get back in!

Moving the vertical bars can also be done to space them evenly over the reduced panel for aesthetic purposes.

D. With the cut panel bars fitted, the panel can be cut with an angle grinder using the cut panel bars as a guide.

E. The panel can then be installed as normal.

WOVEN STEEL FENCE PANELS FROM STEELSCAPES

A newly erected Corten steel fence providing a modern screen to this courtyard garden. It’s hard to believe that this fence will turn a golden brown within a few weeks, but it will.

Installation could not be simpler, the hidden fixings secured within the posts tightly grip the panels, they can even be held off the ground if necessary.
